2. Production

2.1 Pre-production
In November 1997 the production team and the director Juan José Jusid of an upcoming movie Un Argentino en New York traveled to the cosmopolitan city of New York in order to deal with city’s representatives concerning filming in the city and possible movie locations. There were these locations selected in the end: Central Park, Seaport, Dakota building where John Lennon lived, Times Square, Tower Records, Harley Davidson Cafe, Hard Rock Cafe, Soho, Chinatown, Coney Island and Elbow Corner, which is a famous café in Downtown. Movie producer Carlos Mentasti said about locations: „We had to be very precise with locations because in New York once you have a permission to film in Street 69 you can not just decide and go film elsewhere. For this reason we contacted an American producer to help us book locations in advance.“
At the end of year 1997 it was announced that leading roles would be portrayed by famous Argentine actor Guillermo Francella and young talented twenty-years-old actress Natalia Oreiro, who won all rounds of casting for her character of Verónica. The movie’s plot is a comedy about father-daughter relation, where the father gets lost in New York without being able to speak English. It was also announced that Oreiro would sing in the movie.
Big party even before the official start of filming of movie Un Argentino en New York took place in Buenos Aires in January 1998. Director Juan José Jusid, actors Guillermo Francella and Natalia Oreiro and the production team were all present at the celebration.
Director Juan José Jusid altogether with the filming team left for New York on Friday January 23rd 1998 in order to finalize all remaining details before filming would start with main cast. It was announced that Natalia Oreiro, Guillermo Francella and Diana Lamas are the only actors to fly and film in New York. The remaining cast would film their scenes in Buenos Aires. Moreover, it was announced that director’s son and composer Juan Federico Jusid would compose original movie’s score.

2.2 Filming
The movie was filmed in February and March 1998. Filming took place in New York City in USA as well as in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In New York, apart from the star cast of Natalia Oreiro, Diana Lamas and Guillermo Francella, there was a twelve-members team present whom forty-members team from the USA was assisting. Filming was very international indeed.

Big celebration before departure to New York; Oreiro & Francella filming in New York in February 1998

Filming started on February 9th 1998 in New York’s neighborhood Manhattan. First filming day was rainy and cold, which was quite typical for this season in the Big Apple. Apart actors, there were also two movie producers Carlos Mentasti and Luis Scalella present who flew in together with filming team. On the location, there were three cars, two trucks, cables and lights ready for the scene to be shot without any problems. The first scene shot was with Guillermo Francella sitting on the bench in park with tears in his eyes. Actress Natalia Oreiro comes close to him and they hug in surprise encounter. The scene had to be filmed several times before the movie director was satisfied with it. Francella said after filming the scene: “Everything was alright even though Manhattan is full of cars and movement, which time to time was not good for filming. But this is also part of the city’s beauty.” Art director Margarita Jusid said: “We were ready for snow, but not for that much snow. Now we need to work far more with lights to make sure scenes can follow up.” The same day a scene in front of Dakota Building, where lived and was killed John Lennon, was filmed.
Next scene to be filmed was taking place close to Central Park. It is a scene where Verónica (Natalia Oreiro) and her father Franco (Guillermo Francella) are in a typical yellow taxi driving around the city. Yet instead of driver there was camera and in the car behind was director Juan José Jusid, director assistant Hugo Lauría, camera operator and microphones operator. The scene of dialog in the taxi was filmed four times before the director happily shouted: “Cut!” The director said about filming: “The difference between filming in the USA and in Argentina is that we are far more used to improvisation, work long time with no breaks and also with far smaller budget.“
Each working day, Monday to Saturday, started at 6am when filming crew altogether with actors Guillermo Francella and Natalia Oreiro had breakfast together and were getting ready for early shoots. „I am extremely happy that this movie is my first. I am happy that we have so much time for rehearsal because that is very uncommon while filming a telenovela,” said Oreiro during filming and added: „I am singing two songs for the movie, but I do it as Verónica, my character. But the truth is that in Argentina I have already received an offer to make my own CD. However, I want to wait what people think of my songs in the movie before I decide to record my full CD and be singer professionally.” Actor Francella said concerning the New York’s filming: „I have always wanted to film in New York, and besides this the story is very nice. However, I could not speak English, so I took some lessons in Buenos Aires before the filming has started.”
When there were scenes being filmed at the famous Times Square, the filming team had a little problem with local police. Actress Natalia Oreiro said about that: „We were just filming at the Times Square when ten policemen stopped us. So we showed them authorized permission to film here and they let us work with no further troubles.“ During filming Natalia Oreiro found time to talk in an interview with magazine Gente about her movie’s singing: „This is for me the biggest challenge yet. I recorded two songs for the movie. The most difficult to record was Que si, Que si, but second song Caminos also has its charm. Both songs were written by Pablo Durán, who writes songs for stars like Xuxa or Affo Verde.“ She also talked about her movie’s character: „Her life and mine might seem quite parallel. I also left home to follow my dreams when I was 17 years old.” Director Juan José Jusid said about this very talented young actress: „Natalia has very good timing with other actors. We did not choose her because of her success and fame from TV, but there was a long casting which was as about acting as singing. I am sure Natalia will do an excellent work here!“

On Tuesday February 17th 1998 there was a scene at Brooklyn’s famous football field filmed. The team worked there from 6am till 6pm. One hour of rent for the field cost the production 2.000 dollars, and for that reason the director needed to make sure all necessary scenes would be filmed in agreed time. “Americans are professional, that is true, yet they are far less flexible. They film movies for longer time and more money, we could not afford that,” said the director after all scenes at the field were finished.
During filming in the USA, Natalia Oreiro’s boyfriend and actor Pablo Echarri flew there to spend some time together in the Big Apple. They had enough time to take a look into Soho and Village neighborhoods, and also they went for lunch with Woody Allen and his girlfriend Soon Yi in restaurant Cipriani. The only thing that Oreiro complained about was the everlasting cold: “In Argentina we never have such cold!” To make sure that Oreiro and Echarri could enjoy privacy, movie’s costume designer Silvia Alperovich, who shared a room with Oreiro, moved to another room of their hotel Salisbury. Oreiro, moreover, invited her parents Mabel and Carlos to New York, so they could celebrate her mother’s birthday on February 22nd 1998 together in restaurant Novecento in Soho. Before their departure back home, they managed to go and see famous Broadway performance of The Phantom of the Opera.
According to the original production plans, filming was supposed to take place in New York for two weeks only and five weeks in Buenos Aires. However, there were too many scenes taking place in New York, the filming schedule had to be changed and in the end there were five filming weeks in New York and two weeks in Buenos Aires only. Due to the change, the budget rose to 3 million dollars, which made it the biggest budget for national movie till that time. “When you have in New York cameras, lights, actors, you simply can not leave without completing all necessary movie scenes,” said the producer Carlos Mentasti regarding the necessary schedule changes.
After all scenes in New York were finished, the filming and production team moved to Buenos Aires on March 14th 1998, where filming continued. Actors Guillermo Francella and Natalia Oreiro altogether with director Juan José Jusid talked after their return to Buenos Aires with newspaper La Nación from March 16th 1998 about filming. “My children are small, so for me it was a challenge to have eighteen-years-old daughter in the movie. I had to clearly imagine how it is to be a parent of a teenager. She is his light of life, but she also wants to live independently. My character copes with that decision badly,” said Francella. “Producer Carlos Mentasti came to me with the movie’s idea, but in fact he gave me only two key words - Guillermo Francella and New York. I came up with the idea with teenage daughter according to which the script was written,” said the director Jusid. “My natural hair color is brown, but for my role of Verónica I changed it to red,” said Oreiro concerning her image change: “In Verónica I see a bit of myself. I also left my home country to live my dream. Verónica became a singer, I became an actress.”

Filming of the big movie project Un Argentino en New York was successfully completed and concluded on March 27th 1998 in Buenos Aires. Movie’s premiere was set for May 21st 1998.

2.3 Post-production
“Working with Natalia on this movie was amazing,” said the movie director Juan José Jusid in magazine Gente from April 23rd 1998. “Ninety percent of the movie was filmed in New York and Natalia had to adapt to new surrounding very quickly and to maintain her search for character of Verónica. It is Natalia’s first movie but she surprised me a lot. I am sure her career will be amazing!”
In an interview for magazine Tele Click said Natalia Oreiro about songs she recorded for movie Un Argentino en New York: “Songs names are Que si, Que si and Caminos, and both were for the movie written by Pablo Durán. The themes of songs are expectations, light of life but also conflicts that we as teenagers have with our parents. The songs are just right for my movie’s character who decides to go alone to New York.”
Natalia Oreiro said in another interview, this time for magazine Caras, about the similarity of her and her character Verónica: “She has the same drive, potential and innocence, which I had when I came to Buenos Aires at 17 years. But I did not see it as anything difficult. I always believed that I have a lot to offer and my idea was to enjoy my life and see what life would bring me back.“
