Entre Caníbales (Cannibals) - 2015

ENTRE CANÍBALES (Cannibals) is Argentinean telenovela filmed from March 2015 based on the idea of famous director Juan José Campanella, who also directed several episodes. The telenovela is shot by production and television company Telefé in cooperation with company Cien Bares, filming studio Ronda de Martínez, Uruguayan TV station Monte Carlo and international Latin American TV channel Fox Life.
In the leading female role there is Uruguayan actress Natalia Oreiro and in the leading male roles there are Argentinean actor Joaquín Furriel and Chilean actor Benjamín Vicuña.
The world premiere of the telenovela took place on May 20, 2015 on channel of Argentinean TV station Telefé. The premiere in Uruguay followed up on May 21, 2015 at TV station Monte Carlo and on the same day there was a premiere on TV station Fox Life broadcasting throughout Latin America.

Despite positive reviews from the media, the telenovela Entre Caníbales was not successful among viewers, such as was expected by the production and creators of the program (Rating of the telenovela was below 10 points for vast majority of the episodes). The theme of the telenovela is very dark and mature and did not attract many people. In June 2015 it was decided by the production team that the amount of episodes would be shortened from originally planned 120 to 60. The last episode was broadcasted on Tuesday September 15, 2015 at TV station Telefé.

1. Telenovela information

1.1 Plot
Young girl Ariana (Natalia Oreiro) moves from the countryside to neighborhood of the capital Buenos Aires, which is dominated by local rich family. There she and her friend become victims of a sexual violation by four sons from the rich families. Her friend dies and Ariana soon enough finds out that she is pregnant. Because she cannot keep the child, she leaves her son with the priest Martín (Danny Pardo) who helped her.
Now, twenty years later, she decides to get her son Diego back and to avenge herself. Nothing will make her hesitate; she is unstoppable, especially because one of her abusers (Joaquín Furriel) is running for the president of the state…

1.3 Main characters

Ariana – girl that was abused 20 years ago by powerful men. Now she needs to become part of the president of the nation campaign to have her revenge.

Agustín – he works as an assistant to Rafaela and is the youngest political team member. He is shy, but honest, and will win Ariana’s love.

Rafael – he grew up protected by power. Now he is very successful politician among people and is leading presidential campaign. He, however, has a lot of secrets.

Francisco – he helps Ariana to have revenge against those who harmed her. He likes her because she reminds him of dead wife that he too wants to avenge.

Diego – son of Ariana who was born from rape and left to a priest after birth. Diego is now taking part in revealing political crimes but he ends up being injured.

Eugenio – the leader of presidential campaign of Rafael. In the 90ties he led campaign of Rafael’s father and he wants to repeat the success. He will do anything to win.

2. Production

2.1 Pre-production
The name of actress Natalia Oreiro was mentioned in connection to new anticipated project of TV channel TeLeFe for the first time in August 2014. It was announced that famous Argentine Oscar winning director Juan José Campanella is developing a script for TV project that he would direct too and where the leading character is to be portrayed by Oreiro. It would be for the first time since 2004 (after the end of telenovela El Deseo) that Oreiro would return to working for TV station TeLeFe.
In October 2014 it was announced that the project is being produced by successful show runner Tomáse Yankelevich, and that the script is being further developed by writer Gustavo Bellati based on Campanella’s original idea. Furthermore, it was announced that leading male character was offered to famous Chilean actor Benjamín Vicuña, who could portray the character running for the president of the country in the upcoming elections.
The TV project was presented officially for the first time on December 5th 2014 at the press conference of TV channel TeLeFe. The telenovela is to be called Ariana (later was renamed to Entre Caníbales) and it was confirmed that actress Natalia Oreiro was cast into the leading role. Moreover, short synopsis was revealed.
In January 2015 it was announced that start of the shooting of telenovela Ariana is scheduled for February 2015 with premiere possibility in April or May in the prime time of TV channel TeLeFe. The very first promotional poster was also revealed together with several additional talents that should appear in the story: Joaquín Furriel, Leonardo Sbaraglia (Sbaraglia was personally selected by Oreiro, however, was unable to join the cast in the end due to previous commitments) and Eduardo Blanco. In the mid-January it was announced that the telenovela should have 120 – 140 episodes and that it would be consequently dubbed into neutral Spanish as to be sold to other Latin countries outside of Argentina. Additional production companies are Uruguayan TV channel Canal 4 and Chilean TV channel.
Actress Natalia Oreiro was on January 21st 2015 part of presentation of brand Terma, where she talked about the project personally for the first time: “This year starts for me with a lot of adrenaline thanks to projects that I am working on; one of them is filming with Campanella. It is my debut in dramatic telenovela because so far I was only in comedies. It is a story of a woman who was violated and after twenty years decides to take revenge.” Oreiro also said: “We should start filming by the end of February and the premiere could be in April. José Campanella wrote the story and he will direct the first four episodes.”
It was further announced in February 2015 that the filming will start in the beginning of March and that there were additional talents cast: Marcelo Melingo, in the role of Ariana’s husband, Natalia Lobo and Carla Pantanali. The filming will also take place in studios Ronda de Martínez under the production of César Marcus.
Oreiro confirmed on February 18th 2015 that she has already visited studios of TeLeFe to see the set and she was impressed. There was also already a dress rehearsal together with actor Benjamín Vicuña. Oreiro also confirmed that she will start shooting her scenes from March 2nd 2015 and that she will be shooting the project for 9 months. The telenovela will be broadcasted four times per week in the prime time of TeLeFe. The name of the telenovela was officially changed to Entre Caníbales (Among Cannibals). On Friday February 27th 2015 a photoshoot of promotional photos took place with Natalia Oreiro and other leading characters of the telenovela. “It is for the first time we officially meet with Benjamín and Joaquín, in order to make promotional photos for Entre Caníbales,“ said Oreiro during the shoot: “My character suffered a lot and now she does not believe in love, religion, men, because none of it ever helped her. Let’s hope she will find peace she longs for.”

2.2 Filming
The filming of telenovela Entre Caníbales started on Monday March 2nd 2015. First scenes to be shot were of exteriors with the use of fast cars or helicopters. Lead actress Natalia Oreiro said after the first filming day: “My first filming day was very calm, although I didn’t sleep at all last night as I was excited to start filming. Working with the director is smooth. He lets actors do the scene according to them and then he tells us in three words how he wants it, so everything is very relaxed.” The very first unofficial photos from the filming featuring actors Oreiro and Benjamín Vicuña were released on March 10th 2015.
On Thursday March 12th 2015 there were exterior shots being filmed at local graveyard. There were Natalia Oreiro, Benjamín Vicuña, Joaquín Furriel and also the director Juan José Campanella present. Oreiro confirmed that at the moment they are filming exterior scenes and that the filming in interiors should start only in the middle of March.
Actor Joaquín Furriel said in an interview from March 10, 2015: “I asked Campanella why he wants to do a telenovela and he told me that it is exactly something he has not done yet and that it is a challenge for him. We plan to film till October 2015 because Campanella wants to make 120 - 150 episodes, not more. We will shoot four episodes per week but with the quality of TV series. My character is running for the president and character of Benjamín is helping me with that. The more power we get the more interest we generate from character of Natalia who wants to take revenge on us.”
On March 18, 2015 an article about filming of Entre Caníbales was published in magazine Pronto. There were published new photos with Oreiro and Vicuña from filming in neighborhood Tigre by Buenos Aires and in the article was furthermore revealed that Oreiro is filming only 25 hours per week in order to be able to attend to her small son.

On Sunday March 22, 2015 an interview with actress Natalia Oreiro for newspaper La Nación was published, where she said: ”When I met with representatives from Telefé and they offered me a role on TV I told them no. But then they told me who is behind the telenovela and suddenly it was impossible to refuse the offer.” She said about her character: “Two months prior the filming I started to work with psychologist and two girls who suffered from certain kind of abuse, because I am facing a great responsibility to portray the character who was abused correctly and that I could be able to portray her truthfully and at the same time serves as a heroin. My character is very complex, it is a crime story but there are many mysteries. The viewers are going to discover new information together with my character. Some information was not revealed even to me because the director wants me to find it out altogether with my character.”
On Monday April 6, 2015 at night there were Natalia Oreiro and Benjamín Vicuña seen filming exterior scenes. In April and May continued extensive filming in exteriors and also in interiors in studio in Martínez.
On Sunday May 24, 2015 lead actor Joaquín Furriel suffered an accident while playing with his daughter at home. The fracture was not critical, but he still had to withdraw from filming of Entre Caníbales for one week. He returned to set only in first week of June. “I was lucky enough that I did not hurt my head and that they did not have to operate me,” said the actor who for next two months had to have cast.
On Thursday June 18th 2015 it was announced that filming of telenovela Entre Caníbales would be shortened from original 120 episodes into half, 60 episodes. The reason is low rating of the telenovela in Argentina. The filming was scheduled to be concluded by the end of August 2015. The same day there were exterior scenes filmed with actress Natalia Oreiro together with Mario Alarcón.
On Wednesday August 12th 2015 there were scenes filmed in the interiors with special participation of box champion Césara Cuenca, who was filming scenes with actresses Natalia Lobo and Veronica Pelaccini. On Friday August 14th 2015 the whole filming team met for a joint dinner after filming in the exteriors will night. There were also Natalia Oreiro and Benjamín Vicuña present.
The last filming day of the telenovela was on Thursday September 3rd 2015. There was also present director and producer Juan José Campanella. Actress Natalia Oreiro said about the telenovela: “On the TV there was just broadcasted the episode where Ariana finds out that Agustín was one of the rapists and that he is most probably also a father to her son. It was a very demanding scene and I wanted to show all that was going on inside of her. It was a one shot and I was afraid I would mess it up, but at the same time I was very sure what I wanted our audience to see.” She said about shortening of the episodes: “Today we film the very last episode. Because of the rating we had to accommodate our story but we never wanted to loose the quality of this project. I always knew this was a risky project. And these days people also watch more often by internet which does not show in the rating. I understand that the telenovela deals with topic, which everyone wants to watch on their own terms.”

On Friday September 4th 2015 there was a party to celebrate the end of filming of telenovela Entre Caníbales, where were many actors, production team and filming crew. There were also actresses Natalia Oreiro, Natalia Lobo or actor Mario Alarcón.

3. Release & Promotion

3.1. Argentina
The very first promotional photos of telenovela Entre Caníbales was published on Sunday March 29, 2015 by newspaper La Nación. There are three actors on the photo - Natalia Oreiro, Benjamín Vicuña and Joaquín Furriel. Second promotional photo was published by American magazine Variety, where was featured further information about the TV project that is being filmed in noir style with touch of cinema scope. “This telenovela will lift Telefé into completely new dimension of entertainment,” said the producer Tomás Yankelevich.
On Tuesday April 7, 2015 there was a gala taking place to celebrate 25th anniversary of TV station Telefé, where apart from many other stars were present also lead actors of upcoming telenovela Entre Caníbales, Natalia Oreiro, Benjamín Vicuña and Joaquín Furriel. Moreover, director and author of the project Juan José Campanella was also present so they could together present the very first telenovela trailer.
The first TV promos were broadcasted on TV station Telefé on April 21, 2015 and they feature characters of actors Oreiro, Vicuña and Furriel. Oreiro says in the promo as Ariana: “When it happened to me, they didn’t believe me, they hid it, and they silenced me. The only thing I could do was to disappear. Hours passed, days, years…but today my past is my present. Hatred is like a wine; it gets better with time. Now I have a chance like never before. I am thirsty today and I drink my hatred. And for the first ever I might have justice!” In the streets of Argentina also appeared posters announcing the upcoming premiere. New TV promos were featured on TV screen until May’s premiere.

On Monday May 4, 2015 actress Natalia Oreiro talked in an interview with Telefé Noticias about ongoing filming: “We are ready for the premiere, we already have promo and it is all very exciting! The director Juan wants to have everything perfect, he is a perfectionist and in the telenovela there are many details. For me it is amazing to work with him, with the whole team, and also to be back to work for Telefé after so many years. I have a lot of expectations, but I am also nervous.”
On Tuesday May 5, 2015 there was an official press conference for telenovela Entre Caníbales taking place in Dot Baires Shopping. There were all actors, director as well as filming crew present. It was announced that the premiere will take place on May 20, 2015 at 11 pm and that the telenovela will be broadcasted 4 times a week – Monday to Thursday. At the press conference there was also a 10 minute trailer presented, which could show present media a bit more from the story. “I think this is the role of my life. It is a huge commitment to portray the role accurately. It is a very ambitious project in all aspects and I feel like we are part of new TV history,” said Natalia Oreiro for media.
Actress Natalia Oreiro was featured on the cover of magazine 7Días on Sunday May 10, 2015. In an interview she talked about her new telenovela: “My character’s life stopped in the moment she was raped. For her each night is the night when that happened. All that motivates her now is revenge. For me it is very strange to portray her because revenge was never something that would motivate me.”
Just few days prior the premiere, on Sunday May 17, 2015, actress Natalia Oreiro was on covers of newspapers Clarín and Tiempo Argentino. For both newspapers she gave an interview and posed for exclusive new photos. “Producer from Telefé called me and I answered him directly that if he is calling about telenovela, my answer is no. I wanted for 3 or 4 years take a break and make few movies and other projects and after finishing with Solamente Vos in 2013 I didn’t want to return to TV so quickly. But he told me about the story and the director and I could not say no anymore. And it was not just because of Juan José Campanella but the story was attractive to me as well,” said Oreiro for Clarín.
On Monday May 18, 2015 there was a private premiere of the first two episodes of the telenovela for cast and crew. “To see the first episode on the big screen was very emotional for me. I hope our story will attract viewers to the screen,” said Oreiro for present media after the screening.
In the day of TV premiere, on Wednesday May 20, 2015, there was a live interview with actors Natalia Oreiro and Benjamín Vicuña for Telefe Notícias: “For three months we are working to present this project to the people. We are excited,” says Oreiro. “It is a different kind of story where nothing is as it seems, exactly like in real life. We work with an outstanding team and we are curios what will the reaction of the audience be,” concludes Vicuña.

The first episode of telenovela Entre Caníbales was broadcasted on Wednesday May 20, 2015 at 11pm on TV station Telefé. The rating of the first episode was 14.4 points (almost one and half million viewers) and the program was third most watched program of the day. Critics in the Argentinean media were very positive:

“It has suspense, it has drama, it has realistic view of politics, it has Furriel, who had to gain 10 kilos for the role, it has outstanding Vicuña, it has Oreiro, who transformed herself into a hurtful topic, and last but not least it has Campanella who returns to the themes of looking in the eyes and secrets!“

On Friday May 22, 2015 there was an interview with actors from the filming set screened in TV program AM. “Today we started to film at 7am,” says the director Juan José Campanella. “We film at the cemetery today and it is true that the set helps actors get into character,” adds leading actress Natalia Oreiro: “We just finished filming a very intense scene where my character found out something very important for future development of the story.” The same day in the evening there was a party to celebrate the premiere with actors and filming crew in club Belushi in the center of Buenos Aires.
On Sunday May 24, 2015 there was a new interview published with actors Natalia Oreiro and Joaquín Furriel for newspaper Perfil. “The theme of our story is universal: revenge, betrayal, love and politics are the words used all around the world,” said Furriel: “There are many TV shows filmed abroad and are successful here in Argentina, but we are creating project of equal quality that could be seen in whole Latin America.” On Tuesday May 26, 2015 Oreiro was also featured on the cover of magazine Hola as part of promotion to telenovela Entre Caníbales.
Despite the fact that the second episode of the telenovela had rating just a little bit lower than first episode (12,3 points), the third episode, which aired on Monday May 25, 2015, had rating only 7,5 points. This significant drop in rating was noticed by several Argentinean media that wrote about national TV projects as being uninteresting for local viewers. Even though Entre Caníbales has excellent scrip and acting, the media claim that actors in supporting roles, despite their good acting, are unknown to the viewers and that the production was depending only on the famous lead trio (Oreiro, Furriel, Vicuña). The theme of the telenovela is very adult and dark and seems like did not attract masses. The media say that it is difficult to keep up the rating now, but with a good project such as Entre Caníbales it could still happen.
The fourth episode had better rating, 11,0 rating and the telenovela was second most viewed national program of the day. Fifth and sixth episode managed to keep up with the rating and the second week was concluded with sixth episode with rating of 11,5 points.

On Thursday May 28th 2015 in the evening actress Natalia Oreiro was after 12 hours working day part of a video-interview with news portal La Nación, where she said: “It is chaos,” she laughs: “And each mother who is working will agree with me, because even when I am working, I am in my thoughts partly at home with my son. Moreover, I don’t sleep enough, because when I get home I want to be with my son and only after that I am studying the script till late night. But it was my choice and I wanted to be part of this project with everything that comes with it.”
On Friday May 29th 2015 actor Benjamín Vicuña said in an interview with Nuevo Diario about working with actress Natalia Oreiro: “Natalia is versatile, pays attention to details and she is a very good colleague. She is thorough and has always something to offer. I am sure that one day she will direct as well.”
On Thursday June 18th 2015 there were several decisions of the production team announced regarding the future of telenovela Entre Caníbales; because of the low rating of the telenovela in Argentina (the average rating of first 16 episodes was only 9,5 points) the screening time was moved from 11 pm to 11:30 pm. Furthermore, the number of episodes was shortened from originally planned 120 to 60. Argentinean server Infobae asked its readers why they do not watch the telenovela. There were over 4 thousand correspondents and majority (56%) answered that they don’t watch it due to late screening time. 30% of readers don’t watch it because of the story and only 14% don’t watch it because of the cast.
The last 60th episode of telenovela Entre Caníbales was broadcasted at 11:30 pm on Tuesday September 15, 2015 on TV station Telefé.

3.2. Uruguay
Telenovela Entre Caníbales is party produced also by Uruguayan TV station Canal 4, also known under name Monte Carlo TV. This TV station was having a program presentation 2015 in Montevideo on April 9, 2015, where the new telenovela of Juan José Campanella was featured. The event was attended by Uruguayan star Natalia Oreiro, who presented the trailer. “I think Ariana is the role of my life. I prepared for her for four months prior the filming so I could portray her with respect to the sensitive topic. It is an adult telenovela, with suspense, as is everything that Juan is making,” she said at the presentation.
The premiere took place on Thursday May 21, 2015 at 9:30pm on Monte Carlo TV.

3.3 Latin America
The TV premiere of Entre Caníbales took place on May 21st 2015 on TV station Fox Life, which broadcasts in whole Latin America. Thanks to this channel the telenovela can be daily seen by about 50 million viewers from states of Latin America. The lead protagonists Natalia Oreiro and Benjamín Vicuña recorded special promo videos for viewers of Fox Life, where they invite them to watch the telenovela.
