Música en espera - (Music on hold) - 2008

Música en Espera is an Argentine romantic comedy filmed from August 25th to November 3rd 2008 in Buenos Aires. Patricio Vega (co-script writer of famous movie La Seňal) wrote the script with collaboration with Julieta Steinberg. The script writing process started already in 2004. Argentine production company BD Cine bought rights for the script and movie release on January 11th 2008. This script was chosen out of 830 participating scripts. Another production company working on the movie was Cine.Ar SA.
The director was Hernán Goldfrid for whom the movie was first silver screen movie of his career. Promotion company Interfilm was investing 3.5 million pesos into the movie. The total budget was 4.4 million pesos (1 million dollars). The movie was filmed also in studios of CineColor in Buenos Aires in Palermo Hollywood neighborhood.
Very famous Argentine stars Diego Peretti, Norma Aleandro and Natalia Oreiro portray main characters. In supporting characters there are Pilar Gamboa, Rafael Ferro or Carlos Bermejo.
The movie premiered in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on March 19th 2009. The movie was box office success; first two screening weeks the movie was on top and following three weeks still remained in Top 10 box office. In total, almost 240.000 Argentine cinemagoers saw the movie and the movie became one of the five most grossing national movies of 2009, which earned more than 3 million pesos. The movie was also officially screened in cinemas of Uruguay; this was from June 18th 2009. The movie also got its limited release in year 2010 in the USA and Canada.
The movie was, moreover, successfully presented at various international film festivals including those in Spain, Argentina, USA, Bolivia, Canada, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Costa Rica and Bermuda Islands. The international movie’s name is Music On Hold.
Both leading protagonists Oreiro and Peretti were awarded for their performance by the Tatu Tumpa "A nuestra Estrella" award at the international film festival XI. Festival Iberoamericano de Cine de Bolivia. The movie also received five prestigious nominations at Argentine Premios Sur 2009, which are decided by Academia del Cine. The movie also received five other nominations for Cóndor de Plata awards. In February 2010 at the film festival 33rd Portland International Film Festival movie’s director Hernán Goldfrid was awarded with Best New Director Award. In March 2010 the movie received main award “The Best Narrative Film“ from jury of festival Bermuda International Film Festival.

1. Movie Information

1.1 Plot
Ezequiel (Diego Peretti) is a music composer who needs to finish composing new movie’s music but lacks inspiration. Paula (Natalia Oreiro) is an assistant to head of bank and is also in late stage of pregnancy. Her mother Juana (Norma Aleandro) is coming from Spain to be with her daughter when she gives birth and also she wants to meet father of the child. The problem is that Paula does not have any partner and father. When Ezequiel (Diego Peretti) comes to bank because he got himself into money crisis, Paula uses the situation and introduces Ezequiel to her mother as a father of her child.
Ezequiel agrees with this lie under condition that Paula would provide him with access to melodies, which bank uses as waiting tones, and which Ezequiel wants to use as source of his inspiration. The situation gets complicated when they find out that Ezequiel’s ex-wife Mariana (María Ucedo) is a doctor of pregnant Paula. And it is Mariana who Paula’s mother starts to suspect from being lover of Paula’s boyfriend Ezequiel…
The story is full of funny moments and outstanding acting performances; it is a story where chaos of lies and humor serves as a motor to start love of two very different hearts.

It is already the second time when two great actresses of present time meet on the big screen – Natalia Oreiro and Norma Aleandro. For the first time they were together in movie directed by Eduardo Mignogna called Cleopatra. Their protagonist colleague in the movie is Diego Peretti who also appeared in three episodes of telenovela Sos Mi Vida together with Oreiro as Aldo Peludi.

1.3 Main Characters

2. Production

2.1 Pre-Production
For the first time Natalia Oreiro talked about the movie in interview for Agenda Urbano in Córdoba while opening her shop Las Oreiro on July 12th 2008. “I will be filming new movie in August together with Norma Aleandro and Diego Peretti,” she said.
According to Argentine newspaper Crónica from 16th of July 2008 the filming is scheduled to start in late August and the movie will be also shot in studios of Alta Definicion Argentina in Buenos Aires.
On August 13th 2008 Argentine informative website Puroshow wrote that Norma Aleandro is confirmed to star in the movie and her character is a mother of Natalia Oreiro’s character.
The same day Natalia Oreiro was interviewed at Radio 100 where she also spoke of her role in the movie. She said she would be playing a pregnant woman. “I have already tried a fake belly on, and I liked it.” Natalia changed her hair color for the movie to dark brown and also more than month before the filming she got five kilos fake belly so she could practice walking and moving as a pregnant woman. Natalia said that she also took few maternity lessons to portray her character as precise as possible. Natalia also gave an interview for newspaper Clarín. She said: “I am pregnant for almost the whole movie, and it is a bit strange to see me with the belly. Even though that the movie is a comedy, my character is least comedian. I play strict, perfect woman who works in bank. I really liked the script.”

2.2 Filming
First filming day was on 25th of August 2008 in Buenos Aires, wrote newspaper La Nación. The same day there was also first official press conference for the movie that was held in studios of CineColor in Palermo Hollywood. Main actors Norma Aleandro, Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti together with director Hernán Goldfrid were one hour late because that day they were already filming first scenes.

„Many reporters past years always asked me if I am pregnant. Now I play a pregnant woman and also in my real life I would like to get to know how it is to be really pregnant, but so far I am not desperate to be pregnant,“ said Natalia during conference. „The character that I portray is very different from my previous ones, she is pregnant with whole her soul, I understand that for her it must be very special time. Paula is however very inexpressive woman, she wears only grey, black or white, and she is formal and elegant. This changes when she meets Ezequiel…at the end of the movie she will be different woman.“ Norma Aleandro said: „I liked the script, it is a comedic comedy, this genre is very difficult to make and there are only very few in our cinemas.“ Natalia also added to working together with Diego Peretti: “I worked with Diego already in Sos Mi Vida, and I loved his acting. When they called me and offered me the role, Diego and Norma were already in. I worked with Norma before but I really wanted to work with Diego. We still do not know what kind of couple we will make but I hope we will find that soon. So far I don’t even know if he is a good kisser,“ Natalia laughs. The movie is being shot for eight weeks in Buenos Aires. And the premiere is so far planned for January 15th 2009.
During charity organization foundation party Fundaleu on 8th of September 2008 Natalia Oreiro mentioned that she is currently working on the movie and that she is very happy with it.
Natalia Oreiro finished filming first part of the movie after four filming weeks on September 19th 2008 so she could work on few episodes of her cybernovela Amanda O.
The filming continued according to Puroshow on October 20th 2008. The last scenes of work were held in clinic Los Aarcos, in neighborhood of Palermo. There were filmed scenes of birth of Natalia’s character’s baby. “I won't say a sex of my baby to maintain tension, but the name is similar to the theme,” said actress Oreiro. The filming was successfully concluded on Monday November 3rd 2008.
Party for the occasion of the end of filming took place on Tuesday 4th of November 2008 in club El Living. Natalia Oreiro together with Diego Peretti were present as well as the director Hernán Goldfrid. It was also officially changed the date of premiere to 19th of March 2009.

2.3 Post-production
On January 20th 2009 there was new movie’s official website www.musicalapelicula.com released containing many new information. There were new trailers, official photo gallery, backstage photos, actors and crew information, official movie poster released as well as part for news and wallpapers.
In the interview for Clarín from 15th of February 2009 Natalia Oreiro talked about her movie’s character: “I portray a bossy woman who looks at what her surrounding thinks of her and she is very afraid to be just herself. She is in ninth month of pregnancy and she lives on her own. She keeps on lying to her whole family. And suddenly she meets a guy played by Diego…I cannot tell you more. I enjoyed making this movie a lot!” adds Natalia.

3. Release

3.1 Cinema Release
3.1.1 Argentina (World Premiere)
Only few days before the official premier of the movie Música en Espera there were promo events taking place in order to get the media attention and support cinema attendance. The main protagonist trio Natalia Oreiro, Norma Aleandro and Diego Peretti appeared in March and April 2009 in various printed or TV media giving their interviews and photos. Multi-cinema chain Village Cines, who was the main distribution company of the movie in Argentina, in March 2009 started to show funny commercials featuring movie’s stars Oreiro, Aleandro and Peretti inviting cinemagoers to come and see their movie Música en Espera. “Do you want to laugh, cry, have fun, go crazy and at the same time see a great movie? This is Música en Espera!“ said Natalia Oreiro in commercial. “In March it will all start when movie Música en Espera comes to cinemas near you!“ said Peretti and Aleandro added: “It is a beautiful movie that will be screened in all cinemas!“ On March 13th 2009 main movie protagonists Natalia Oreiro, Norma Aleandro and Diego Peretti met with Argentine media in one of the hotels in Buenos Aires’ neighborhood of Palermo in order to answer questions and pose for photographers. Actors thus gave exclusive interviews to magazines and newspapers Perfil (14-3-2009), Critica de la Argentina (16-3-2009) and Clarín (19-3-2009), which were being released altogether with movie’s premiere. Moreover, actors gave interviews to TV stations of TeLeFe and TN, where the interview was screened in their program Show. “What happens to our characters in two days does not happen to many people in two years. And any time something new happens, our story gets a new spin,” said Oreiro for TV station TeLeFe and Peretti adds: “One event leads to another and a small problem becomes bigger and bigger. We had a good laugh during filming!” Oreiro talked about filming as a pregnant woman: “I have never been pregnant but with movie director Hernán we attended courses for pregnant so I must say that I have it all clear in the theoretical part of pregnancy,” she laughs. In an interview for TV station TN Oreiro said: “When I got the fake belly I went to the streets of Palermo. No one recognized me because everyone knew Oreiro is not pregnant,” she laughs. “It is a story of two people who help each other when they need it the most. He has problem of paying his debt and she has problem with her mother who comes from Spain,” adds Peretti about the story.

On March 14th 2009 an interview, which was given previous day, with Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti for newspaper Perfil was published. “We live in time of economic crisis and we need to get away from our problems at least for a little bit and we still need to believe in love. The movie talks about a special encounter of lonely people who in the time of modern world full of phones and computers are always surrounded by some people, but in the end are always alone in heart. The movie gives hope that love is always possible,” said Oreiro.
On March 16th 2009 an interview was published by newspaper Critica de la Argentina with Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti, where the two talked about the movie, their characters and working with the director and filming crew. “My character is afraid to admit that she might have failed, that is why she lies. Paula is pregnant and lives without her baby’s father, but her family has no idea about this. She is afraid that if people around her would know, she would be unable to live her life as she likes,” said Oreiro about her character. Peretti added: “We talked a lot together with Hernán, Naty and Norma about the way how to put characters into funny situations without them knowing it and thus making the scene even more comic for the audience. It is very good comedy of situations. I felt really good doing my character, I could breathe freely. I like how the story has its own speed! It is actually a thriller of a comedy,” he laughs.
On March 17th 2009 Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti were guests of morning live show Duro de Almozar at the Argentine TV station Canal 13. “Director Hernán Goldfrid was fantastic. When we were filming he talked to us about each scene, its development and its place in the whole story,“ said Peretti. “This is the good thing about the movie, as an actor you have more time to work with each scene. When you film a telenovela everything is much more faster. I portray a woman in her ninth month of pregnancy, but the romance is not based on this pregnancy, it only works as a connecting factor,” added Oreiro. The same day in the evening at 9pm, official movie pre-premiere took place in cinema Belgrano Multiplex in Buenos Aires. Natalia Oreiro, Norma Aleandro and Diego Perreti; altogether with director Hernán Goldfrid were all present and could enjoy media attention. “It is a movie that we worked on last year and I hope that people will like it,” said Oreiro, who came accompanied by her husband and musician Ricardo Mollo.

On March 18th 2009, Natalia Oreiro together with director Hernán Goldfrid were guests of morning live show RSM at the TV station America 2. “I wanted to work on this movie because I like the genre of comedy. The final result is far better than I have ever expected. We had such a good time filming the movie,” said Goldfrid. “My character and character of Diego Peretti meet because while he waits on the phone to be connected he hears a melody that inspires him and he decides to get this melody,” said Oreiro and adds: “It was already for a longer time that I wished to work with Peretti because I knew we would have a good chemistry as actors and necessary humor to create a nice couple.” The same day another interview with actress Natalia Oreiro was published by La Nación newspaper, which she gave at her own house at Palermo Viejo. “My character might seems a little boring, focused, successful, professional and role-model of a good daughter, but despite all that Paula hides the truth from her parents who live in Spain. The reason is that she no longer has partner who is the father of her baby. The surprise visit of her mother and the fact that she meets a musician who is struggling through art and economy crisis are factors that will help Paula to create a lie in order to keep holding on her ideal picture of life,” she said about her character. The video interview with Oreiro for La Nación was published the same day also on the official newspaper’s website. One day later, on March 19th 2009, an interview with main protagonist trio Oreiro, Aleandro and Peretti for newspaper Clarín was published. Natalia Oreiro started to talk about her preparation to portray a pregnant girl. “I bought several books about pregnancy. With Hernán (Goldfrid - director) we also attended several courses of yoga for pregnant women; we were like a real couple. I also had a fake belly with which I tried to move like I was really pregnant. My character sometimes even forgets that she is pregnant due to her busy working schedule so every time I tried to put myself in her shoes and think what exactly would she do in that situation. This was the core for my acting.” Norma Aleandro said about her character of annoying mother: “Personally I don’t think I am annoying mother, but I might have other downsides, but I am definitely not annoying. I think I actually respect privacy of people very much. That is why I enjoyed so much portraying this character.“

The official cinematography premiere of Música en Espera took place on Thursday March 19th 2009 in Argentine province Buenos Aires in towns Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata and La Plata; and in province Santa Fe in third biggest town of Argentina Rosario. The first screenings took place already at 11am.
In 38 screening halls, 4.100 cinemagoers saw the movie in only one day (always more than 100 viewers per hall). With such great numbers the movie placed itself immediately into the first place of Top 10 box office of Argentina.
Immediately after the release, there was a series of critics published in various media, from newspapers to radio. Majority of the critics were very positive and were highlighting great script, outstanding performances of main and supporting cast and it was claimed that the movie is superb comedy, which was missing from Argentine cinematography of present day. Also movie director Hernán Goldfrid could enjoy positive critics for his work and complete feel of the movie.

The film server Otros Cines announced on March 24th 2009 that movie Música en Espera during four days from Thursday March 19th till Sunday March 22nd 2009 was seen by amazing 50.749 cinemagoers in 38 screening halls in provinces of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe. The movie was still placed to first place of Top 10 box office. Newspaper La Nación said that around 1.172 people saw the movie in each cinema. During the first week of screening the movie earned already more than 700.000 Argentine pesos.
Moreover, in March and April actress Natalia Oreiro appeared on covers of Argentine magazines Brando, Miradas, Cosmopolitan and Mujer, for which she gave interviews and photos.
“I like to participate on selection of my costumes. I try to imagine the surrounding, childhood, of my character, where was she born, who are her parents, what kind of school did she attend, what kind of food does she like. For this character I put on everything that I normally don’t wear, neutral colors, perfect hair. I also informed myself about pregnancy, I read books and attended courses, I even tried to bike with my fake belly and I was going out in Palermo with that belly and no one recognized me,” laughs Oreiro in interview for magazine Miradas. In an interview for magazine Brando Oreiro talked about pregnancy: “Despite that thanks to the movie I could experience how it is to be pregnant, I personally don’t feel like being a mother yet. So far I did not wake up with that thought on my mind.“

On March 26th 2009 the movie premiered in third Argentine province called Salta. The same day the movie also got its release in town Sante Fe in province Santa Fe. Another 31.412 people saw the movie from March 23rd till 29th 2009 (second screening week) in 39 cinemas. Altogether record number of 106.413 cinemagoers saw the movie in only two weeks. The movie earned more then 1.42 million Argentine pesos (383.300 US dollars). Also after the second week the movie remained on first position of Top 10 Argentine box office. After the third screening week, from March 30th till April 5th 2009, amazing 153.914 people saw the movie in 45 cinemas in provinces of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Salta. During the third week thus 34.426 people went to see the movie. However, the movie fell to sixth place of Top 10 box office. On April 8th 2009 main movie’s protagonists Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti travelled to Córdoba in Argentine province Córdoba in order to promote their latest movie there as well. During one day they met with various local media. Immediately after their arrival, the actors took part in live talk-show program on radio Cadena 3. “It is absolutely funny movie where each character is changing and at the end of the movie they are truly changed inside,” said Peretti about the movie. “The movie has also very beautiful music. Music is something that we take as part of the movie, but in our case the music is truly very important character of our story,“ said Oreiro: “We are very pleased that the movie is so successful. Hundred thousand people saw the movie in two weeks, this is amazing result for national movie!“ The same day both Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti also gave various interviews for local newspapers. In an interview for La Voz, which was released only one day later on April 9th 2009, Oreiro said about movie’s success: “Usually it is that a movie is successful with audience but not with critics, or the other way around. In our case we managed to reach both successes.” Peretti added about movie’s script: “The script was what attracted me to the project in the first place. Apart main characters the movie has also very strong supporting characters, which are in the story not to be aside, but each of them has own personal story. The script is full of little details and the viewer must read between the lines.” Oreiro adds: “It truly is a very intelligent story, but is not childish. The movie has its own rhythm. Everything happens in course of two days only and the characters don’t even have enough time to properly think about their actions. It is like a snowball,“ she laughs. Movie’s premiere in Argentine province Córdoba took place on April 9th 2009. The same day movie was also released in other three Argentine provinces; Jujuy, San Juan and San Luis.

The movie continued to be screened in 44 cinema halls in Argentina. In its fourth screening week, from April 6th till April 12th 2009, the movie was seen by another 25.472 cinemagoers. Altogether 186.111 people saw the movie already. The movie remained in Top 10 box office on seventh place.
On April 16th 2009, the movie was premiered in another three Argentine provinces; Neuquén, Tucumán and Mendoza, the fourth largest province of Argentina. In fifth screening week, from April 13th till 19th 2009, movie Música en Espera was in 40 screening halls seen by another 15.581 viewers. The movie reached record number of 200.000 people, and after the fifth week amazing 207.240 people saw the movie in total. The movie was on the tenth position of Top 10. Thus the movie Música en Espera became one of the most successful Argentine movies of 2009.
On Thursday April 23rd 2009 the movie premiered in province La Pampa. The same day the movie was also for the first time screened in town Bahía Blanca in province Buenos Aires. Only one day later, April 24th 2009, the movie got its release in province Misiones. Thus in the sixth week, from April 20th till 26th 2009, the number of people who saw the movie rose to 221.339. The movie, however, was not in Top 10 anymore.
On April 30th 2009 the movie premiered in another two Argentine provinces; Corrientés and Chaco. In total, 230.00 saw the movie. The movie was placed on second position of most seen national movies in period of January-April 2009.
In province Catamarca the movie premiered on May 7th 2009. Another province, where movie Música en Espera was premiered, was Chubut in south of Argentina. This premiere was supported by organization INCAA and took place on May 27th 2009 in province’s capital Rawson with the occasion of opening new cinema. The movie was personally presented by actor Diego Peretti and director Hernán Goldfrid altogether with representatives of organization INCAA.
Premiere of the movie in already sixteenth province of Argentina La Rioja took place on June 4th 2009. On June 11th premiere in province Santigo del Estero took place. And on June 27th 2009 premiere of the movie in Rio Negro in town Choele Choel took place. This province was already nineteenth and last province out of twenty-three Argentine provinces where the movie was screened in cinemas.
On July 1st 2009 La Nación announced that movie Música en Espera was in Argentine cinemas by June 30th 2009 seen by almost 235.000 cinemagoers. The movie was thus placed on second position among national movies with highest number of people in first half of year 2009. In July 2009 screening of the movie in cinemas was officially concluded.

Movie’s DVD was released by company AVH on July 15th 2009. On the disc there are apart the movie with English subtitles also bonus materials such as trailers, backstage video or actors’ filmographies.
Altogether with DVD release, newspaper La Nación announced on July 18th 2009 that Música en Espera is one of few national commercial hits of the year. The movie was seen by almost 235.000 people.
On January 2nd 2010 results of Argentine cinematography of 2009 was released. Movie Música en Espera was with its 230.000 viewers placed on fifth position in Top 10 box office. The movie thus made the Top 5 list of best movies of 2009. Altogether, 234.092 cinemagoers saw the movie and the movie earned amazing 3.087.831 Argentine pesos (around 1 million dollars).

3.1.2 Uruguay
At the Uruguayan film festival Punta del Este on April 24th 2009 actress Natalia Oreiro announced that there is a plan to also release her latest movie Música en Espera in Uruguay very soon. The movie would thus have its first official cinema release also abroad.
To support movie Música en Espera premiere in Uruguay, both main protagonists Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti flew to Uruguayan capital Montevideo on Wednesday June 17th 2009 to start two days promotion.
Immediately after their morning flight from Buenos Aires, which was a bit delayed, both protagonists took part in live TV show Bien Despiertos at TV station Teledoce. “I am sorry I am here looking like this with no make-up. Our flight was delayed and it was to come like this or not to come at all,” laughs Oreiro entering the show. She said about her movie’s character: “I always search for new characters, in movies or on TV, exactly like in case of Paula who is an assistant to bank director, is pregnant and thinks that she does not want anyone, that she can manage all on her own,” said Oreiro. “Already when I was reading the script, I knew I wanted to be in the movie. Patricio Vega wrote the scrip, which is very funny, intelligent and for the whole family,” said Peretti. After the TV show, Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti went to take part in show Las Cosas en Su Sitio at radio Sarandí.
In the afternoon, moreover, the actors met with reporter from TV station Canal 10, in order to give another exclusive interview. “It is not that now I will be in movies and not on TV, it is not like that. I am always trying to portray new characters for me; I don’t want to repeat myself. And movie allows me to do exactly this, and this is exactly what happened for me in Música en Espera, where I portray pregnant girl who lies to all her family to stay the perfect one in their eyes,” said in an interview Oreiro. “I also prefer movies because it is something that I enjoy and have fun with,” added Peretti. The same day evening the official movie’s pre-premiere in cinema Hoyts Alfabeta in Montevideo took place. “My character is very strict, but it all changes when she meets character of Diego Perreti, who is going through artistic crisis and when he meets my character he finally gets inspiration,” said Oreiro at the premiere for TV station VTV.

In the morning of Thursday June 18th 2009, both movie protagonists took part in radio interview of show Segunda Manana at radio Espectador. “The movie has above all very well written script. When I was reading it I had to laugh so many times. I think that this is the core for a very good movie. This is the movie where everyone knows that the two main characters will fall in love, but the important part was to show how this happens in such an extraordinary way,” said about the movie Natalia Oreiro. “It is Hernán’s first movie but he knows exactly what he is doing. He knew how to put the story together to make it funny and lively,” added Diego Peretti. Immediately after this interview, Oreiro and Peretti moved to studio of TV station Canal 10, where they filmed their participation in show Puglia Invita, which was broadcasted on June 20th 2009 at 12.30pm. “I am very happy with the final result. I knew that it was going to be a good film already when I was reading the script,” laughs Oreiro in the show. Before the two-day promotion was finished in Uruguay, both actors gave interview and photos for newspaper La República. “We knew very well the direction the movie was taking, thus filming was far more relaxed,” said Peretti and Oreiro added a story from filming: “Before the filming had started, the actors had to go for check to a doctor because of health insurance. I took my fake pregnancy belly on and when I came to be the next one to see the doctor, he came to me, looked at me and asked me in which month of pregnancy I was. I responded that I was in eight and half and he immediately started to ask if I had any problems in pregnancy and so on. I burst in laugh because the doctor really thought that I was pregnant,” she laughs.

Official cinematographic premiere in Uruguay took place on Friday 19th 2009 when the movie got its cinema distribution. The movie was screened in cinemas of MovieCenter, Potones Shopping and Hoyts Alfabeta. Uruguayan critics wrote:

The movie was also screened in Uruguayan cycle Cine Universitario and was shown on Saturday September 5th 2009 and Sunday September 6th 2009. Screenings took place three times a day; 4pm, 6pm and 8pm.

3.1.3 Canada
After the movie Música en Espera was successfully presented at Canadian film festival Festivalissimo, the movie got its official cinema premiere on July 16th 2010. In Canada the movie was distributed under international English name Music On Hold. The movie was screened in limited cinema distribution in cinemas of Montreal in Spanish with English subtitles. Canadian critics wrote:

3.1.4 USA
Movie Música en Espera was very successful at various film festival in the USA and thus got its limited cinematographic distribution in state California, USA. The premiere of the movie, which was translated into English as Music On Hold, took place in Los Angeles on Friday August 13th 2010 in cinema Leammle Theaters in hall Sunset 5. Official movie distributor in USA was Outsider Pictures as part of their program Outsider Pictures‘ Latin America Showcase. The movie was screened till the end of August always at 3pm. Critics of USA wrote about the movie:

“Clever and effective piece with outstanding performances and nicely crafted moments makes this movie very well done romantic comedy!”

The distribution company Outsider Pictures later on also managed to premiere movie Música en Espera in limited release in state of Florida. The first screening there took place in cinema Tower Theater on September 18th 2010 at 9pm. The movie could be seen there every day till Thursday September 24th 2010. The entrance fee was 6 dollars. Critics at Miami, Florida, wrote:

After successful screening in Miami the movie returned to cinemas there in October and was seen in cinema Tower Theater from October 18th till October 20th 2010. Moreover, the movie could be seen also from November 27th till December 3rd 2010 every day from 9pm for price of 6 dollars.

3.2 Film Festival Release
3.2.1 Spain
The very first international film festival where movie Música en Espera was presented and also the Spanish movie’s premiere took place during film festival Muestra de Cine Argentino de Madrid (Argencine 2009). This festival takes annually place in Madrid in June. Movie Música en Espera became on June 12th 2009 the opening movie of the whole festival. Actor Diego Peretti traveled to Madrid to present the movie personally.

Second Spanish film festival with movie’s participation was 35° Festival de Cine Iberoamericano de Huelva. This festival took place from November 14th till November 21st 2009. The movie was screened as part of festival section Sección Rábida: Largometrajes. The movie was screened for the first time on Monday November 16th 2009 at 8.30pm in cinema Casa Colón. Second screening took place on November 18th 2009 at 4.30pm in cinema Gran Teatro. The last screening took place on the last festival’s day, on November 21st 2009 at 6.30pm in cinema Gran Teatro.

3.2.2 Bolivia
Second international film festival where movie Música en Espera was officially presented was in August 2009 film festival XI. Festival Iberoamericano de Cine de Bolivia, which takes place annually in city Santa Cruz, in Bolivia. On August 26th 2009 main movie’s protagonists Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti landed with flight from Buenos Aires at 6pm at the Bolivian airport Viru Viru in Santa Cruz, in order to present the movie at festival personally and they were also special festival’s guests. Immediately after their arrival they could enjoy local and international media attention. “I am very happy to be in Bolivia, it is my second visit of the country,” said Oreiro and added to the fact that in Bolivia she is known as a singer rather than as an actress: “I was invited for the festival thanks to my latest movie. In past years I focus mainly on movies, but if there is a chance I have no problem to sing some songs too,” she laughs in an interview at the airport. One day later, on August 27th 2009, both protagonists took part in official press conference in hall of hotel Yotaú from 4.30pm, which was preceded by photocall taking place by the hotel’s swimming pool. Stars of movie Música en Espera were answering questions of present media and they talked not only about their latest movie but also about their other diverse artistic activities. At the film festival’s closing gala, Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti received prestigious award Tatu Tumpa ‘A Nuestra Estrella‘ for their outstanding movie’s performances. Ariel Gamboa, festival’s director, handed out the awards on August 28th 2009. “We know what kind of effort did you put into this festival and how important that is. My country Uruguay is developing a lot in cinematography, and Argentina as well. Thank you all, thank you Latin American movies,” said Oreiro in her acceptance speech. “I think Bolivia has amazing directors and actors and it is important to promote such movie also abroad. Today, for me it is a great honor to receive this award,” said Oreiro in TV interview after the gala. There was also official private after-party that night hosted by festival’s administration where all guests of the festival were invited.

3.2.3 USA
In the USA, the movie was for the very first time presented during film festival Latinbeat 2009, which takes place annually under movie organization Lincoln Center and where selected Latin American movies are shown. The New York premiere of the movie Música en Espera took place on September 6th 2009 at 8.30pm. The movie was screened two more times, on September 12th and 16th 2009. Second USA screening of the movie took place on the West coast under the Consulate of Argentine Republic in Los Angeles on November 20th 2009 in Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood as part of “Argentina New Cinema 2009“. Música en Espera was one of the six selected Argentine movies that were selected and presented. The twentieth edition of Spokane International Film Festival took place from January 28th till February 7th 2010 in American Washington. On February 6th 2010, movie Música en Espera was screened at 2.30pm. On February 13th 2010 the movie was presented at the 33rd Portland International Film Festival. That day the movie was screened two times, at 12.30pm and at 7.45pm. One day later the movie was screened again, this time at 12.30pm. At this film festival movie’s director Hernán Goldfrid was awarded by the Best New Director Award, which is decided by festival’s visitors each year. The movie also placed itself on the third position of the most liked film of the festival. Already fifth film festival, where movie Música en Espera was in the USA presented, was Seattle International Film Festival. The movie was presented on May 21st 2010 at 5pm in Admiral Theater and the movie was placed to section Contemporary World Cinema. The movie was screened two more times during the festival and got very positive feedbacks from the audience. In USA’s state Minnesota there is yearly taking place festival called Minnesota Film Arts, where movies from all around the world are presented. Movie Música en Espera was presented on Friday July 30th 2010. Moreover, the movie was screened daily from Sunday August 1st till Thursday 5th 2010 in cinema St.Anthony Main Theater. From August 13th 2010 there was a festival in state California taking place; San Diego Latino Film Festival. Movie Música en Espera together with Mexican movie Regresa were two opening movies of the whole festival. Música en Espera was screened always three times a day till Thursday August 19th in cinema UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas and the movie was sponsored by Media Arts Center, who organizes the festival. Cinema ticket cost was 10 dollars.

The last film festival of the USA where the movie was presented was on September 10th 2010 in state of Texas the Rio Grande Valley’s CineSol Film Festival, where Latin American movies are selected and being presented. Movie Música en Espera was screened on September 11th 2010 from 8pm in cinema Harlingen Performing Arts Theater. The ticket price was 10 dollars.

3.2.4 Argentina
On October 1st 2009 Argentine film festival Festival Tucumán Cine started. Movie Música en Espera was as part of the festival screened three times. For the first time it was on October 1st 2009 at 8pm, for the second time it was the same day but at 10pm. For the last time the movie could be seen on Friday October 2nd 2009 at 5.20pm. Main movie protagonist Diego Peretti was present at the festival to promote the movie personally. The movie was competing for award in section Comptención Oficial, but did not win.
As part of prestigious film festival 24° Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata, which took place from November 7th till 15th 2009, movie Música en Espera was also presented. The movie was not part of the official competition but was selected for section Especiales. Both movie’s protagonists Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti were present at the movie’s screening taking place on November 13th 2009 at 10pm in cinema Cine Paseo.

On January 13th 2010 the movie was screened during the ‘Ciclo de Cine Argentino‘, which took place in Argentine town Tucumán. The movie could be seen at 9pm in Museo Folklórico Provincial General Manuel Belgrano. One year later, in February 2011, movie Música en Espera could be seen as part of the same festival cycle again. This time the movie could be seen on February 19th 2011 in town San Miguel de Tucumán in cinema Teatro Orestes Caviglia. The movie was screened at 8.30pm and the entrance was for free.
In February 2010 in Argentine province Mendoza there was a cinematographic cycle called Noche de Cine por los Parques taking place. The entrance to all presented movies was free. Movie Música en Espera was as part of the cycle screened three times. For the first time it could be seen on February 2nd 2010 at 9.30pm in town San Rafael. For the second time the movie was screened at 9.30pm on February 3rd 2010 in cinema Parque Gral San Martín in town Mendoza, and for the third time the movie was screened just one day later at 9.30pm at Plaza San Martín once again in town San Rafael.

3.2.5 Costa Rica
From October 2nd till 12th 2009 there was a fifth edition of international film festival Festival de Cine Latinoamericano at Costa Rica taking place in town of San Jose in theater Variedades. Among 11 movies that were selected per each Latin American country, there was movie Música en Espera representing Argentina. The movie was screened on October 3rd 2009 at 4pm and at 6pm and the entrance was for free.

3.2.6 Cuba
Movie’s screening at Cuba took place as part of film festival 31° Festival de cine de La Habana, which was taking place from December 3rd till 13th 2009. Actress Natalia Oreiro was present at the festival, but in order to promote her newer movie called Francia. Screening of movie Música en Espera was on Friday December 11th 2009 at 5.30pm in cinema 23y12. The movie was presented in festival’s section Panorama Latinoamericano.

3.2.7 Bermuda Islands
Already fifth edition of international film festival Bermuda International Film Festival was taking place from March 19th till 25th 2010 in the capital of Bermuda Islands Hamilton. Movie Música en Espera was presented at the festival on Saturday 20th 2010 at 1pm in cinema Southside Theater. For the second time the movie could be seen on Tuesday March 23rd 2010 at 6.30pm in cinema Liberty Theater.
At the final festival’s award gala on March 25th 2010 in cinema Liberty Theater, the Argentine movie Música en Espera won the main festival’s award called “The Best Narrative Film.“ All five members of festival’s jury decided that Música en Espera is the winner. Jury’s member Tim Hodgson said about the movie: “What happens if a music composer without inspiration meets a girl in her ninth month of pregnancy? This is a story of a very beautifully drafted romantic comedy!”
On April 29th 2010, movie Música en Espera was screened at Bermuda Islands one more time, this time as festival’s winner. The presentation took place in Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. The movie could be seen at 6.30pm and the cost was 10 dollars.

3.2.8 Canada
Movie Música en Espera was in Canada for the first time presented on June 12th 2010 at 8pm as part of film festival dedicated to Latin American movies called Festivalissimo, taking place in Montreal. The movie was festival’s closing feature film and its success made cinematographic premiere of the movie in Canada happen.

3.2.9 Dominican Republic
In the Dominican Republic there was an annual international film festival called Festival de Cine Internacional de Fine Arts taking place in 2010 for the first time. This film festival started on August 26th 2010 and lasted till September 1st 2010. Altogether there were twenty-one international movies presented, among those also successful Argentine movie Música en Espera. Famous actress and movie’s star Natalia Oreiro accepted special offer to be festival’s guest and thus would participate in movie’s promotional events and discussions.
Even before her departure for film festival, Natalia Oreiro expressed her cheerful emotions towards festival’s participation and moreover was very happy to visit the Dominican Republic. “I wish to thank to festival’s organization team who selected movie Música en Espera to be the opening movie of the festival. I also hope that the audience will enjoy the movie. And for me, it is a great opportunity to visit the Dominican Republic,” said Natalia in an interview for Dominican newspaper Diario Digital RD from August 15th 2010.
The official festival’s opening took place on August 25th 2010 in hotel Hilton. The first screening of the movie Música en Espera for public was on August 27th at 9.35pm. Second screening was one day later at 4pm and the final screening was on Sunday August 29th at 10.30pm.

Interviews for media; Interview for radio Zol (27-8-2010); Show Aquí Se Habla Espanol (29-8-2010)
After Natalia Oreiro’s arrival to the capital of the country Santo Domingo, she participated in various media, TV and radio interviews and photo-shoots on Friday August 27th. In the surroundings of festival Fine Arts Oreiro was answering questions of individual present journalists. Oreiro gave an interview for magazine Pandora, which was released in September 2010 and for which Oreiro also posed for exclusive photos. “When I found out that actor Diego Peretti is attached to star in the movie, I immediately accepted the offer because he is genius, he is very good actor and he is very funny,” she says in the interview and adds: “It is a first feature film of the director, but the script was very well written!“ Oreiro, moreover, gave an interview for TV program De Calle con Dafne, where she said: “I never knew that in the Dominican Republic there are such a good movies. I think there are many spheres we might explore together. This is good about us Latino Americans, we are a family!“ Oreiro also talked about portraying pregnant girl Paula in her movie Música en Espera and added that she would love to invest money into Dominican cinematography. Later the same day Oreiro was guest star of radio show El Mismo Golpe at the Dominican radio station Zol. That day evening Oreiro participated at the first public screening of the movie Música en Espera at the film festival.
Next day afternoon Oreiro took part in the second public screening of her movie, which was followed by signing session for movie fans. On Sunday August 29th 2010 Natalia Oreiro altogether with actress Lola Duenas became guests of live show Aquí Se Habla Espanol broadcasted by Dominican TV station Color Vision.
Natalia Oreiro stayed in the Dominican Republic till Monday August 30th 2010 before her departure back to Buenos Aires.

3.3 Home Media Release
AVH distribution company released the DVD in Argentina on July 15th 2009. The disc contains apart from the full movie with English subtitles also bonus material such as behind camera documentary, interactive menu or information about cast and crew. The same DVD was also released in Uruguay on August 22nd 2009.

3.4 Television Release
Movie Música en Espera had after its successful cinematographic and international film festival release also its television release.
After limited movie’s distribution in USA in states of California and Florida, movie Música en Espera had its American TV premiere. The movie was screened on Friday October 15th 2010 by TV channel HBO Latino. The movie could be watched at 8pm of East Coast time. Movie’s reprises were on Saturday October 16th at midnight, Monday October 18th at 9pm and finally on Saturday October 23rd at 6.15pm of East Coast time.
In Colombia the movie was screened by TV channel Moviecity on Sunday September 25th 2011 at 9pm. Movie’s reprise took place on Tuesday September 27th 2011 at 7.25pm.

4. Awards & Nominations
Main protagonists of movie Música en Espera Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti were both awarded for their outstanding performances by Tatu Tumpa "A Nuestra Estrella" award at the film festival XI. Festival Iberoamericano de Cine de Bolivia in Santa Cruz. The awards were handed out on ceremony taking place on August 28th 2009. The award Tatu Tumpa refers to God of Sun and Moon in local culture of Guaraní.
In November 2009, nominations for prestigious Argentine awards Premios Sur, which are awarded by the Argentine Movie Academy, were announced. Movie Música en Espera received five nominations: Mejor Opera Prima, Mejor Guion Original, Mejor Sonido and actor Diego Peretti was nominated as Mejor Actor Protagonico while actress Natalia Oreiro was nominated as Mejor Actriz Protagonica. Unfortunately none of these nominations were turned into awards at the ceremony that took place on December 15th 2009 and where actors Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti altogether with director Hernán Goldfrid were present.
On January 19th 2010 nominations for other Argentine awards called Cóndor de Plata were announced. Movie Música en Espera received five prestigious nominations in following categories: Mejor Actor – Diego Peretti, Mejor Actriz – Natalia Oreiro, Mejor Opera Prima, Mejor Guión Original and Mejor Música Original – Guillermo Guareschi. The award’s gala took place on June 8th 2010 with presence of actress Natalia Oreiro. Unfortunately none of the nominations were turned into awards.

At the final gala of film festival 33rd Portland International Film Festival in February 2010 in the USA, the director Hernán Goldfrid received an award “Best New Director Award“, which is being decided by festival’s audience.
In March 2010, the movie received award from jury of international film festival Bermuda International Film Festival. The movie received the main award called “The Best Narrative Film.“ All five members of the festival’s jury voted for movies recognition.

5. International Film Festival List
After movie’s outstanding cinematographic performance in Argentina, the movie was presented at series of international film festivals. In Spanish speaking countries the movie was presented in Spain with Diego Peretti’s presence, in Bolivia with presence of Peretti and Natalia Oreiro, at Costa Rica, at Cuba, at Bermuda Islands and at Dominican Republic with Oreiro’s participation. The movie was, moreover, screened at seven various USA’s festivals and at festival in Canada.
